After completing the downloads and installation I unplugged my clip v2 and its bricked. I have read a few forums for fixes and none of them prove useful. Not even the backlight turns on.
04:14:00jawsThe player will not connect through USB either. Pointers? The rockbox utility was not really all that accessible when using my screenreader with it so I might have missed something on the prerequisites dialog box.

05:55:18kendellI've been attempting to generate talk files for my player's music and audio books. I've selected sapi as my speech engine and the voice, as well as testing it to make sure it works. but the generation fails halfway through, it reads the fileList, and starts to encode, but then fails. am i missing something? the manual doesn't give much info on this.

07:26:32 Quit DerPapst1 (Quit: Leaving.)
07:27:33jawskendell: I would assume, the problem is that the utility says sapi but not which one. Most often sapi4 is used though
07:28:53kendellah. I'm seeing sapi 5 voices, and for some odd reason creation of the talk files fails. it can't for some reason encode them
07:28:53kendellsays something like, error *filepath\filename.wav failed to encode. then it cleans up and aborts
07:30:14jawskendell: mmm, sapi 5 voices.. try using the realSpeak pack, which works with sapi 5. Unfortunately my sansa clip V2 is currently bricked so i wasn't even able to start using rockbox
07:30:14jawskendell: try supplying the wav files in some other way? create them out of an OCR package.. or with some textToSpeech utility?
07:30:28kendellrealspeak pack. mmm, I think I have an old copy lying around taht works with jfw that will work. I have noticed taht with high quality voices such as natural voices the player seems to be bogged down, maybe it's the quality of the files?
07:30:35jawskendell: I also suspect this has to do with something in the speech api in the control panel
07:31:00kendelldefinitely could be. forgot to installl the sapi4 runtime so am doing that now
07:31:02jawskendell: maybe the size affects too but lower khz would most likely avoid trouble. Mono files must help out some.
07:31:40kendellah. have no idea about the specks of my player but I do know it runs on z80. thought that chipset was long obsolete?
07:33:03jawskendell: haha.. well, I was just refferring to the quality of the files. A file that does not have a stereo atribute or a higher bitRate or resolution is lighter on resources.
07:33:21jawskendell: not too good with hardware myself
07:34:25kendellI have noticed that you can use espeak, but no matter how I try to load it it fials. tehre doesn't seem to be much help that I can find about what synths the utility works with and how to add new ones. I have an eloquence driver for nvda but doubt it can be adapted for rockbox. don't know what language the program is written in
07:34:43kendellarg, i need a new keyboard
07:36:02kendellwell, looks like rockbox util uses sapi5 and as far as i know eloq is in sapi4. sighs
07:37:05jawskendell: as far as i know, window eyes has got a sapi 5 version of eloquence; but because it is proprietary and ... rigidly lisenced it will only be granted operation while window eyes runs.

07:39:26kendellwhat I really wish would happen is rockbox wuold get some sort of daisy player, but that would mean implementing a tts and as far as I know mp3 player's can't handle that? no clue?
07:41:03jawskendell: there are also spoken daisy books, though... I think it would use up much more CPU when there would be a try to implement an engine. A midi player would e interesting, though... I htink it would require more computing/memory also.

08:57:50pixelmakendell: as far as I know voice generation with the Utility failing on Windows is currently a bug in the Windows port of the Utility and I think independent of the selected TTS. One of the main developers started looking into it but I don't know how far he got.
08:58:45pixelmathere's also some script you could use but I don't know any details

09:00:01bertrikhm, odd, for AMS/AMSv2 devices we often write to a GPIO port that is configured as input, which would make no sense normally.

09:01:30bertrikAlso, we seem to have several AMS/AMSv2 display drivers that try to set a control line of the display both using GPIO and using DBOP
09:03:06kendellgeneration of talk files is still failing. I did manage to create voice files though. does anyone have any ideas? I read the voice wiki article, but it fails during generation of the wav files
09:07:20pixelmakendell: hmm, didn't see you weren't around currently when I answered you about 5 minutes ago. I believe it's a bug in the Windows port of the Utility. Alternatively there should also be a script for generating the talk files but I know nothing about it
09:08:00kendellyup, sorry about that, my internet went down and I just now fixed it. I just downloaded the script and am playing with it

09:10:29pixelmaas far as I know, espeak on Windows uses the SAPI, at least that's one way of installation (the one I used). So I only get the espeak voices under the list for SAPI
09:10:38kendellglares, now there's a bug in the script. windows script host reports a file missing
09:11:44kendellmmmmmaI tried to use the copy of espeak included with nvda, wich failed, and tried using eloquence with sapi4, wich again failed, so now I'm trying loquendo voices under sapi5.
09:13:48kendellyou've bot to be kidding me, this thing doesn't support wildcards?
09:14:45pixelmaI really think that it's not the TTS, the bug in the Utility probably occures whatever you chose. In case you have access to a computer running linux or MacOS that might be more successful
09:15:07pixelmawildcards? What for?
09:17:34kendellarg, don't mind me, i"m an idiot. didn't run the hta file. I tried to drag and drop onto the script file when I should've run teh html one.
09:17:48kendelloh nice, my tea's done
09:22:04bertrikhm, more oddness, the clip+ display driver messes with the pin used for i2c at initialisation
09:24:43bertrikThose lcd drivers could use a nice cleanup, I think I'll do the clipv1 and clip+ first.
09:25:41pixelmajaws: some people experienced hard freezes with the Clip or Clip+ where the unit sprang to life after the battery had been run down completely
09:27:41kendellone thing I found amazing is that my sansa fuze had been dead for months and the player still remembered where I left off and with what file.
09:27:53pixelmajaws: and I don't think it's a bug that the Utility asks for a firmware file. If I remember correctly, that's what you need for the first installation of Rockbox on those newer Sansa players (you need an original firmware file from Sandisk's site that gets patched and installed)
09:28:44pixelmakendell: the resume position is stored in a file

16:44:43mshathlonxpwhat I got when I try set as background file not present in /backdrops as well
16:45:53[Saint]Huh? so if you set a backdrop (from outside the /backdrops dir), and a file of the same name is in the /backdrops dir...it sets the one in the backdrops dir?

16:46:28[Saint]Ok, yeah...that's messed up.

16:54:54gevaerts[Saint]: what do you mean by "a user backdrop never survives a reboot"? I just set a backdrop manually and rebooted, and it was still there
16:56:17gevaertskugel, AlexP: loading backdrops from outside .rockbox/backdrops does indeed seem to be broken
16:56:20[Saint]where did you set it from?
16:56:28gevaerts.rockbox/backdrops
16:57:25[Saint]yes, that's expected to work. I guess I should have been more clear, "setting a user backdrop from elsewhere than the backdrops dir", rather.
16:57:48gevaertsSo when you said "it's not set at all depending on location, and a user backdrop never survives a reboot", you meant to say the same thing twice?
16:57:53 Nick Rondom_ is now known as Rondom (~rondom@nonmodosedetiam.net)
16:58:00[Saint]that's apparently not expected to survive a boot, which is news to me, but something I consider broken.
16:59:20gevaertsLook, I don't care what users expect to work that isn't expected by developers. I care about what actually *happens*. If you keep mixing everything up, don't expect people to keep taking your reports seriously

17:17:59gevaertsThere's the ATA DMA issue some people have with 3.8

18:20:28gevaertsI'm not sure what the "proper" fix should be
18:21:12[Saint]I was wondering that myself just now, however sane it is to load backdrops from the backdrops dir, is forcing it necessary?
18:21:31gevaertsRequiring absolute paths would be rather annoying for themes, especially in the modern world where the path isn't always .rockbox/backdrops
18:22:34gevaertshm
18:23:25gevaertsActually, the context menu provides absolute paths that start with /, so it should be possible to assume .rockbox/backdrops in case the name doesn't start with / and absolute paths otherwise
