17:22:05LambdaCalculus37I'm thinking that while making the forums read-only is a good call, I think it would be better to just close registration of new users for now.
17:22:08scorchedo other ones really have better spam protection?
17:22:29GodEaterscorche: I've no idea
17:22:33GodEaterbut surely it's worth invetigating?

17:22:57scorchei mean, i would think i have engaged some decent defenses - recaptcha, security questions, etc
17:23:04scorchea better version of akismet might be nice

17:23:34LambdaCalculus37scorche: But how about closing registration for now?
17:24:12scorchei think that is a bit extreme, though i havent really looked at the forums in a while
17:24:35LambdaCalculus37Keep our current users, purge out spam accounts, and allow only registered users (legit ones) to post?
17:24:40scorcheif others think that is desired, then i can
17:24:40GodEaterit's pretty horrible scorche
17:25:06GodEaterdeleting spam messages seems to be becoming a full time job
17:25:40LambdaCalculus37I counted 100+ registrations per day. 99% are spammers.
17:26:02scorcheregistrations dont really matter - posts that arent caught by akismet do
17:26:47LambdaCalculus37GodEater: Although those with a poor grasp of English make for funny Dadaist poets, yes, it's terrible.
17:30:07*LambdaCalculus37 counts 46 new accounts from today alone

17:38:25minusthose are a damn pest, i tried everything from recaptcha over akismet to topic-specific verification questions, nothing helps
