Modifying the archos.mod is unlikely, simply because it's too messy.
You've got six gigs worth of harddisk space, why do complicated patching
in the firmware file?

I made a little test: I read the first meg (raw) from the disk, changed
the volume, read the first meg again and compared.

Results: Byte 6 in sector 62 (address 0x7c06) changed. This sector is not
part of archos.mod.
