Hard to believe but I've just verified it. I could overwrite the
beginning of a mp3 file with a bunch of zeros and the JBR as well as
winamp played it without complaining.

So from this experience I'd say: splitting should be easy if some guru
manages it to duplicate an cluster and to relink it in the FAT to other
clusters of the truncated data.
