Summary: USB hardware control

Initial Comment:

Would it be possible for the JBR, while connected by
USB, to still be able to play and record though its own
hardware?

ie when its plugged in, it is not only a new Hard Disk,
but a recording/playng device?

No, the harddisk must at all times be assigned to either the
USB controller or the CPU. It can't be accessed by both.
