To extend the math here, I'd say that 1.27d loads the buffer about once per
minute while Rockbox can wait another ~9 seconds in average between the
loads.

Since this Rockbox version has a 1.76MB mp3-buffer, 9 seconds makes a 15%
bigger buffer, indicating that the 1.27d firmware uses:

 1.76/1.15 = 1.53 MB mp3 buffer (roughly)

Neat to know as a comparison if nothing else.
