I think you're right that most people would rather have acceleration
than fiddle with fixed step sizes. Setting the minimum step size to
1s seems to work pretty well for me. However, if acceleration is
disabled, the behaviour is as before and having the option to change the
step size is again useful. I'm prefectly willing to remove the fixed
step size setting if that's the consensus; we can always leave it as a
compile-time option.
