but it should never start from the beginning again should it ?

If I get any time free I'll try stepping back through versions to see if I can find one that worked more reliably for me, just to make sure I'm not making it up !

You also have to understand the basics of the resume function on the player
models.
The exact position is only saved if you pause the music before shutting off
the unit. If you just turn off the unit while playing, you will resume from
where the position was last saved, that is when the drive last spun up to
read MP3 data.
