is it possible to enforce the unit to pause just before it shuts down ? I can't see that this would cause a problem for anyone except a slightly delayed shutdown ?

You also have to understand the basics of the resume function on the player
models.
The exact position is only saved if you pause the music before shutting off
the unit. If you just turn off the unit while playing, you will resume from
where the position was last saved, that is when the drive last spun up to
read MP3 data.
