I think three options would be better:
>>-shutdown if not playing
>>-Shutdown anyways at the end of the track
-shutdown in a specific period of time
There would not be a need to use a config file for this, b/c the user would
probably not use the same settings every time. A simple tree structure
invoked by the auto-shutoff would work fine:
Shutoff:
Shutdown at end of track
Shutdown if not playing
Shutdown in x seconds/minutes
60 mins
45 mins
30 mins
20 mins
15 mins
10 mins
05 mins
xx seconds (to be input by the user)
or something like that.
Perhaps the auto-shutoff could include a feature to recall between reboots
what the last status was and make sure the box complied. For instance, I
choose to have the archos power off. Then for whatever reason, (like the
list postings here today) it comes back on again. The auto-shutoff would
check and if there are no button presses after the box has come on for say,
2 minutes, the auto-shutoff will power it off again. This maybe a hassle
when combined with auto-resume, but otherwise it would be a benefit, I
think.
Oh, well, just my .02 euros. :-)

well, i think in an idea world, the timer should provide the user with an
option like :
-shutdown if not playing
-Shutdown anyways at the end of the track
