Still thinking out loud here....

Also, any actual remote hardware that was designed to use this cable would
have a standard UART i/o interface, so the remote itself could be used with
other devices too, not just our one wire RockBox application. So the
significant investment made in the remote is more justifiable, and it would
become more of a product in its own right - rather than a RockBox accesory.
