Yes. Batteries are ok. No difference with adapter, and batteries are fully
charged.

I rather thought of some corruption in a reserved HD sector, where Archos
ROM firmware accesses data (?) during boot without USB connection. Otherwise
I would not understand the ability to boot in USB mode.
