I tried this with the following result:

ROOT contains:
.rockbox (dir)
testfolder (dir)

test6.mpa
test7.txt
test8.wps

Set Show files to ALL, restart

Show files mode shown
ALL (restart) All files and folders
SUPPORTED no folders, ajbrec.ajz, .fnt, .lng, .txt, .wps
After restart All files and folders are shown without
                            the extension!
MUSIC nothing
After restart testfolder, .m3u, .mp2, .mp3, .mpa without
                            the extension!
PLAYLISTS nothing
After restart testfolder, .m3u WITH extension
ALL no folders, ajbrec.ajz, .fnt, .lng, ,txt,
                            .wps
After restart All files and folders
