You know, I actually got to see the entire process of locking up.
Normally, the red (drive) light comes on and stays on for a few seconds,
then starts blinking when as it refills the cache.

I had it sitting next to me flat on a table today, and saw that the red
light comes on at the apointed time and the drive light stays on solid
but the unit apparently does not start to read from the drive. The
lockup (music stops) occurs when the cache is finally emptied, rather
than the it occurring immediately when the red light comes on...

Not rocket science, but hopefully another piee of the puzzle.
