Do you mean that the default contrast is bad or that the constrast setting
doesn't work?

Oh that's weird. The Recorder LCD code does nothing special to clear the
screen, it always writes data to the hardware the same way, be it filled with
pixels or not...

Maybe you could write a small app that only draws to the screen in some ways
to see if you can understand what works and what doesn't.
