I will do the schematics for my USB charger this weekend .... I've been a
bit slack. You don't have to worry about the USB connection: you can either
not connect the USB plug, or (as I did) provide a switch on the 5V line
(Vbus) into the Archos. Without Vbus, the USB section of the Archos will
not be 'switched on', so you can leave the USB plug connected at all times.
Illustratively (if you'll forgive my ASCII circuit);

I'm quite happy with my charger, I never use my plug pack anymore - my
Archos just stays connected to my PC at home or work.
