Subject: AW: Diploma thesis: Connecting Archos Jukebox with Rockbox to a V olkswagen Radio
From: Plagge, Frank, Dr. (frank2.plagge_at_volkswagen.de)
Date: 2003-01-29

Hello to all,

you are right, a basic bidirectional communication is needed. A 'light'
communication is possible. From the top view of the system the following
parts are possible:

Radio control panel:
in: CD status with CD number, track number, playtime
        out: every keypress

Archos:
in: remote control like select playlist, track, play, stop, skip,
etc

Based on an Atmel micorcontroller solution, the communication with the radio
is available as a prototype.
The outgoing communication of the Archos is missing. I this this is not
really needed, because it it possible to put the informations about the
internal status of the Archos in the interface box. Additionaly the needed
remote features of the Archos are not available. This means there is a need
to extend the remote possibilities of the Archos within Rockbox. An
interface box is needed which is connecting the different communication
parts. Another operating point is thinking about a good user interface with
the given radio control panel and designing a good so called
remote-content-control via the CD changer interface for an external music
archive. The main focus is keeping the radio system unchanged and keeping
the Archos unchanged - except its firmware.

Kind regards
Frank

PS: A detailed description (sorry, at the moment only in german) of the
diplom thesis is available at

I thought about this concept (for a sony radio) a few months ago, but for a
good UI it is necessary to have a working bidirectional communication as a
first step. There was a long discussion about protocols and concepts on this
mailing list. I am still planning to work on this topic (if I'll find some
time), but it's too early for a diploma thesis for me (5th semester,
electrical engineering, TU Munich). In a year perhaps...
