RE: nomad zen?

To put it another way, it's not trivial or easy to figure out how a
particular piece of hardware -- such as an Archos or a Nomad -- works. Quite
a bit of sweat, trial, and error I'm sure went into deciphering how the
Archos works. Among other things, a willingness to open up and possibly
irreparably damage some instances of that hardware.

Nor is it trivial to build from scratch an operating system which will run
on an arbitrary piece of hardware. To replace the Nomad's software would be
a large undertaking only tangentially connected to the Rockbox project.

Furthermore, the Rockbox project is hardly done; if you look at the requests
page, there are quite a few more things, some of them decidedly non-trivial,
that the Rockbox group seems keen on doing; any other project would
necessarily take away from that effort.

I'm sure the Rockbox developers (I'm not one) are flattered by your
assumption that they could easily crank out Nomad firmware as "cool" as the
Rockbox software (and Rockbox, as you imply, is definitely "cool".)

But perhaps there are Nomad software replacement projects "out there" to be
found; best of luck to you!

Please note that I am speaking for myself, and not for the Rockbox project,
any Rockbox developers, the Church of All Worlds, the Roman Empire, or any
other organization. : )

We scratch our own itches.

We have Archos players and we want to make them better.

Why would we waste even more of our spare time on a lesser product that we
don't even have or care about?

Do you intend to pay us a lot of money? If not, ask a bunch of Nomad owners
instead.
