I tried it today with my jukebox recorder 20:
5s of 1kHz sine converted to 128kbit MP3 playing in a loop, hooked up an
osci at the analog output of the jukebox (with and without load (16ohm
headphones)). I get a perfect sine each time, as long as I keep the volume
below 95, otherwise it's distorted.
I don't know where the error in your measurement is...
