You could try a different brand of adapter. The one you have is probably
applying too much tension and the cassette deck assumes the tape has run
out. I used to have a Memorex model that used a gearing system to spin
the reels but it was too noisy (though it never triggered auto reverse)
and now I use a Sony adapter which is very quiet (uses a ribbon like
yours) but it will trigger auto reverse when it is cold in the car. I
usually hold it up to the heater vent for a few seconds and all is well.

But the line in must sound LOTS better than the cass. adapter! Why is it
different having the running CD player than having the running tape deck?
 Either one is going to wear out sooner or later, and I'd bet the tape
deck will wear out long before the changer. (It may already be wearing
out which is why it's so sensitive to the adapter) If I had that option
of any sort of Line In, I would definitely be using it instead of the
adapter.
