I have all my information in the id3 tags, so file names are only useful
for browsing for me. My structure for music is the following (slightly
different for soundtracks etc.):

x:\genre\artist\year - album\tracknumber tracktitle.mp3

genre: not id3 genre but a simple classification ("Jazz, Funk, Fusion,
Latin", "Rock & Pop", "Klassik", "Soundtrack" etc.)
artist: normally artist name
year: release year of the album to have the directory sorted right order
album: title of the album
tracknumber: always two digits
tracktitle: title of each song

"z:\Jazz, Funk, Fusion, Latin\Andreas Jaeger\2001 - Changes\04
Close-Cut.mp3"
"z:\Soundtrack\Pulp Fiction\07 Son Of A Preacher Man.mp3"

Additionally, I have one "_sampler" directory in each genre where I can
put various-artists cds
