The Nyquist Rate (or Frequency) is twice the value of the highest
frequency in a bandwidth-limited signal; it is the rate at which the
signal must be sampled in order to avoid aliasing. Shannon introduced this
concept (what is usually called the sampling theorem) in communication
theory way back in 1949.
