I have no idea about the archos-rockbox aspects of this. But I know
something about audio production.
The simplest solution is to get an input pad to put between your source
and your recorder. A pad is a transformer which attenuates (reduces) a
signal, and they are typically rated in db.
Advantages: simple to use, predictable
Disadvantages: good ones will run you probably 50-150 USD
- You want a good one because you need it to work and to be as flat
(sonically neutral) as possible.
- You need to make sure you get one with the right amount of pad for the
difference in line-level between the equipment you're using. Too much pad
and you r signal-to-noise ratio is poor.
My recommendation would be to talk/email to the folks at
http://www.sescom.com/ ask them. They are friendly, insanely knowledgeable
about things audio, and are really good at answering questions like that.
They will want to know a few things about the equipment (XLR plugs, RCA,
etc.) They do sell input pads. Note that I have no affiliation, formal or
informal, with sescom, but i think they're good.
And when you figure it out, please post it to the list. It would be good
info to add to the FAQ for recording (what do i need to know about
recording with my rockbox?).
