Actually, i've had the same problem a few days ago.

I was panicking, and even took the whole box apart, trying to find the
problem....

I happened to stumble on these few facts:

Rockbox couldn't be loaded because the batteries didn't have enough
power to spin up the disk
Plugging in the charger, and allowing the archos firmware to take over,
DID work

So, i let the archos firmware at the batteries for a while, and after
10~15 minutes, rockbock could be loaded again!
