So holding stop should do it? will that mess up my resume feature I want to
take advantage of? I have some rather large mp3's (audiobook stuff) that I
would like to resume when I power it back on. I'm just hoping stop doesn't
do what I don't want it to do. :)

That should work. But do you really mean that you press ON and STOP
simultaneously? Holding STOP for a few secs should be enough.
