I suggest you use a utility like PowerQuests Partitionmagic to completely re-install your HD. Clear all partitions (most likely just one) and create a new one.. then do a full surface scan to find any bad spots. ALso make sure you have windows XP SP1 and all further updates up untill now through 'Windows Update'

Make sure when you re0install you format the harddisk as FAT32 otherwise you cannot use it, so NO NTFS!

If the problems persist I think you are having a bad HD..
