I built one using a General Instrument SP0256-017 chip and ran it on a CP/M
machine. But the only reason that it worked was that the chip had all of
the speech synthesis built into it. It had a whole set of phonemes and a
primitive text to speech capability. You just output ASCII to it and it
"talked." You had to spell phonetically and play around to get it to really
sound correct, but there was just no CPU burden at all.
