Strangely enough, the charging seems to work fine now (after re-flashing
rockbox.)

I guess the batteries must've been acting strange (they were brand new),
and just needed some brute-force archos-style complete charging to give
sane voltage values.

Anyway, I will send another mail if something new pops up, but I've been
through three discharge/charge cycles now since I flashed it again, and
not problems. :)

Keep up the good work! Now that this seems to work, I am very happy with
rockbox -- my archos boots up in just over two seconds and works so very
well. :)
