Good old Knoppix, i love it like a second son, but my Gentoo laptop
accompanies me anywhere I will have my own PC (save work, that make me
use XP, ironically using samba as a domain controller)

http://www.gentoo.org - fantastically structured distribution, multiple
stages of install, if you install from stage-1, even binutils are built
as optimised as possible for your platform, they use a version of
portage (hello BSD) for package management, which is better than
debian's apt-get imho
