i didn't see mention of this in the battery FAQ, though it should be there. i must have seen it on
archos' faq.

the answer: the USB port doesn't provide enough power to sustain HD use, though it helps, and will
charge if the HD isn't in use. it's a good idea to have the wall wart plugged in when doing large
transfers.
