I've got an FMR. Well, not on me, it's at newmp3technology.com being
serviced. The cost of service & shipping & shipping insurance was $110. I
could have found another use for that money. ;)

Admittedly, I did open it up to upgrade the hdd, but the problems cropped up
months later, when I was carrying it in my jeans pocket, and compressing it.

The fault seems to be on the pcb under the top left bumper; pressing too
hard there will cause it to freeze, but not pressing enough will cause it to
not be able to boot.

It can't be, as the post you quoted (still below) mentions changing the
batteries! Not all FMR/V2 are DOA, some of them (probably most of them)
work very well, and it peeves me slightly when some people seem to be
continuing the myth that all FMR units die in a short period of time.
