Remember it took nearly a year of hard work for Rockbox to mature enough to be considered equal to or better than the Archos firmware on the mp3 players. I think it will take at least the same amount of time, probably more, to get the much more complex (and much less documented) multimedia devices to the same state.
It all depends on who wants to do the work. Do not assume the same people are willing do the same amount of work all over again. Some might be, some might not. Also, Archos isn't the only game in town any more. Many of us would prefer working with a more friendly manufacturer.
