Somehow that concept sounds familiar to me...

Sounds perfectly reasonable.

Icon data is very small, just 6 bytes. This could be an (optional) part of
an entry in the extension config file. Just 12 hex digits would do the job...

Memory allocation could be an issue, we need some worst-case buffer for the
filetypes.
