Aha! This almost proves my theory. My guess is that your hard drive
starts up in mode 2, without IORDY support, requiring an access time of
400ns, which is longer than the SH1 can do. Are you willing to run some
experimental firmware for me?

Install this:

http://linus.haxx.se/mode4-recorder.ajz (recorder)
http://linus.haxx.se/mode4-fmrecorder.ajz (FM recorder)

That firmware sets mode 4 explicitly, which in turn forces the use of IORDY.

Please tell me if that works or not.
