Subject: RE: unable to format hard drive?

RE: unable to format hard drive?

linux instructions from memory (i.e. may have inaccuracies):

First you need to know which device the drive is attached to. You should already know that if you are using linux with the device, but in case you don't know it, try doing a "tail -f /var/log/messages" (need to be root in RedHat) and _then_ plug in the drive. Look for messages talking about "sda" or "sdb" You could also go down the /proc/bus/usb tree to find the drive.

The drive will be /dev/sda unless this isn't the first SCSI or USB type drive: then it would be /dev/sdb, /dev/sdc, etc.

Assuming you've partitioned the disk and you want to format the first partition, on the command line (you will need to be root -- the "#" is the command prompt, DO NOT TYPE IT IN :-):
  # mkfs -t vfat /dev/sda1

For the second partition, use /dev/sda2. If you didn't partition the disk (e.g. floppy style storage), it would be /dev/sda.
