IO error might mean that you have bad sector. You might need a low level
format.
It happened to me, and I could not even mount the disk on windows.

The solution is to extract the disk, put it in a portable pc and launch low
level format softwares.

I used http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/ a bootable cd image which contains
lots of useful software for hard drives and more.
