Gratis is latin and it sounds much cooler. ;) Seriously, it's a distinction made by Open Source proponents. By definition, to be free, the software must not only come at no charge, but the source code must be available to be (freely) modified by the user. Gratis typically applies to software that is available at no charge but may have closed source or other restrictions on it's use. Perhaps us non-programmer types can use the term "freeware" which might not offend the sensibilities of the proponents of OS? It's a bit more general of a term, and those of us who did not want to tinker with the guts anyway, and are agreeable with the software license might not get beaten down for using the dictionary definition of the word "free".
