I originally had USB 1.1. Then I upgraded to 2.0 and I definitely noticed a
big difference in transfer rate on my FMR.

12 megabyte/s is the max mechanical speed of the 2.5 hard drive of the
archos. Yes it is much less than the usb max speed.
this is decent.

the best lacie drives (3.5 inches) are given 38 MByte/s on usb2 and 50MB/s
on firewire (the same drives)
