Try doing a thorough scandisk on it first.

Hi, all.
I think my Archos is toast, but am not sure in which way, and
whether it's worth reaching into the toaster to grab it <g>. I'm trying to
format the drive through USB with the format command. I said
format j:
and the format goes as usual until 85%. It then stops completely.
Any ideas on how to get it to continue and wipe the whole drive, or whether
the drive is, perhaps, in need of replacement? This is an AJB 6000.
