The standard extension is .m3u, but there are other formats out there.
This is just the most common one, AFAIK.

I've made a separate playlists directory, so that at the top level of my
recorder I have .rockbox, music files, playlists, and videos. You are
free to organize them in whatever manner suits you. =)
