If you use the automatic volume setting, what value do you use?

I noticed that every mp3 seems to have a different recording level, and some are pretty loud compared to others. Mine is set to 8 seconds, but I couldn't tell the difference between 8 and 2. Is the largest value best or should I use something in-between?
