Not sure if you can REMOVE the icon, but you can HIDE it really easily...

Right Mouse Click on the task bar, select Properties, select "Customize"
next to Hide Inactive Buttons, select "Safely Remove Hardware", and choose
"Always Hide" from the drop down...

|has 8 USB cables, im not worried about wasting one. And a USB
|connection is better than parallel. I do not want to buy an
|additional cord. I just would like to remove this one icon.
