I've been riding motorcycles for over 30 years and I know damned well that if you hear a car before you see it, you're not paying attention. You normally don't hear cars while riding at speed on the highway with a full-face helmet on. The wind noise and motor noise drowns out any sound until it is far too late to avoid an accident. In fact, most riders now know that they need to use earplugs to avoid permanent hearing loss from the wind noise: http://hope4hearing.org/motorcycle1.htm A fully faired Honda Goldwing may be quiet enough that cars can be heard, but that's not your typical bike and most of the 'Wing riders have a stereo cranked up anyway. As to the "deformable zone", that's a rather selfish way to approach driving any vehicle. Do you want some guy in a cage to be listening to the stereo blasting while eating lunch, figuring that it's okay if he runs into you because he's got a deformable zone? "See, I was in my car so I was pretty safe. That's why I wasn't really paying attention when I ran over your kid."
