Hi, Joe.
        Do you, or does anyone else, know of a way, without looking at the
documentation or packaging with the unit, and without looking at any label
on the unit, to tell the difference between an FM recorder and a recorder
V2? It's a tall order, but it would be great if it could be done in some
way, even if that way is through software. Is there a single key command, on
the standard Archos firmware, to bring up the radio on FM units which
wouldn't work on V2s?

It will run Rockbox. The FM recorder and the V2 use the same chassis.
Some V2s are even repackaged FM recorders with the radio features locked
out in the software.

Essentially, the FM recorder is identical to the V2 (which differs
slightly from the Recorder V1, namely in that the power was muddled with
a little to use lithium ion batteries (which I believe are custom), the
USB port was changed to the standard USB B port traditionally found on
devices and the case is different) except that the FM recorder... has a
radio.
