Thanks John, I'll tell my friend that that's what he's going to have
to pay. Galling isn't it, that your new one cost less than the second
hand one!.

Rob

Hi Rob

I know of three in the UK which have been bought on E-Bay. They're
working
out fairly consistently at just under £150.

HI John, how much did you pay for it? I've a friend that wants one
too.

Well, we'll see if it's a consistent fault with the FMR. I've just
bought
another one on E-Bay and I'll be returning the original one. Two of my
friends have bought FMR's as well in the last few days and are
awaiting
delivery. All will have RockBox installed!

indication of a faulty hard drive? I understand it is possible to
replace
the HDD with an 80GB one, can someone point me to some instructions on
how
to do it as I have a friend who should be able to do so if necessary.

I had the same problem with my FMR. It just recently stopped working
all
together. It must be a manufacturing flaw as there has been no
explanation
or rime or reason for this behaviour. My thoughts are that it is
likely do
to faulty soldering. Some of the older hard drives were reported to
be
unreliable but since I cannot see either, I have not taken mine apart.
I
guess the bottom line is "don't by an FMR". There have been some
problems
reported with the V2 recorder which is the same as the FMR but with no
radio. The V2 appears to be more reliable then the FMR. It's to bad
because the FMR is a cool little unit. Sorry I cannot be of more help
but
if you find a solution I would love to hear about it.

Cheers...rocker

Subject: FM Recorder developed two Faults

A couple of weeks ago I bought what appears to be the last FM Recorder
to be
retailed anywhere in the UK. Although it will still be under warranty
I am
worried in case the retailer is not prepared to or cannot repair it.
This is
one case where I would rather not just have my money back.

When I first got the FMR I noticed that occasionally it would not
start when
I pressed the on button. Incidentally I noticed that Rob reported a
similar
problem. Like him I assumed I wasn't pressing the "on" button long
enough. I
took the FMR on holiday to Portugal with me and I found that although
I kept
it in the shade this problem was much worse when the FMR was in a warm
environment. Nevertheless, I still get the same behaviour from time to
time
even when it is cool. it is not strictly related to temperature,
battery,
what position the unit is held in or anything else I can think of to
investigate. Once I eventually get it started it works fine but
sometimes it
will not start at all and I have to leave it for a while. Is this an
indication of a faulty hard drive? I understand it is possible to
replace
the HDD with an 80GB one, can someone point me to some instructions on
how

The other fault is simpler but might be more serious. While I was in
Portugal there was a heat wave and the temperature climbed to dg48
Celsius
(somewhere around 120 Fahrenheit). During this time the right channel
stopped working. I know for a fact that the headphone mini-jack has
become
faulty. I think the metal in the headphone jack expanded slightly in
the
heat and unfortunately didn't contract when it became cooler so that
the tip
of the headphone plug no longer makes contact. I can get the right
channel
back temporarily by pressing quite hard on the plug but it's not very
practical. My father-in-law opened up the machine slightly and says
the
socket for the headphone jack is enclosed and can't be got at. Does
this
mean that it cannot be repaired?

I am prepared to buy another machine on E-Bay or wherever if I have to
but
obviously having just purchased the one I have I would be really
pleased if
someone could give me some advice or an opinion.

Regards

John Gurd
