I've done the mod now.
I have my V1R in pieces on my desk with USB plugged in and it is working
with my WinXP laptop. I have no batteries in it and am doing a disk
defragment to stress test it a bit. I'm measuring 4.6 volts at the positive
battery terminal (where I have connected the diode). The diode is slightly
warm.
