Do you have a set of default settings that you keep reloading? If so,
the volume will return to the level you set when you saved those
settings. To avoid this behaviour, you can edit the settings file on a
PC and remove the "Volume:" line.

Battery Status is not available for a short time after the unit has been
turned on, as Rockbox has no reliable measurements from which to
generate a status. Leave the unit on for a couple of minutes and then
check again.
