Well I'm taking the plunge, with a few bids on ebay. I'll let you know how I get on, presumably flashing it has
the same effect as it does on the Archos, I.E. making it run faster, and possibly saving some battery power?
Well this one is likely out of my league but I'll say that boot time is pretty slow on the Iriver. I think the patching is currently just for evoking the rockbox firmware and not similar to rombox on the Archos. Yes you can upgrade the HD. I think there was something in the list archives or the FAQ.

  Hi patching the boot loader was a bit scary but if you take the easy method you should be fine.

  Flashing was more difficult to but with some sighted assistance you can get it foresure. If your brave then you can try it yourself it just involves memorizing the menu tree to run the patch. A good place to get started from scratch is:

  1. Patch a firmware using fwpatcher or the commandline tools.
  2. Flash that firmware with the iriver firmware upgrade process.
  3. Install daily/bleeding edge build onto harddisk.
  4. Go Rockbox!
