Hold down the MENU button as you insert the USB cable, and Rockbox
shouldn't reboot into disk mode.

Whether it's charging or not I don't know for sure - but I think it
does. As you've probably realised, battery status isn't implemented
yet, and no-one has investigated this area of the ipod yet.
