I have managed to solve this and the problem appeared to be that somehow the
english.voice file had been removed from the langs folder. This seemed not
only to mean I had no voice feedback, but it also seemed to give the unit
some big problems when trying to use the rockbox softwre to playback files.
Putting the english.voice file back solved it.

I have the same problem, although mine went wrong a few days earlier.

I have tried the volume, but that is ok.

when I install a new daily build I always delete the .Rockbox folder and the
Rockbox.iriver file.

I have had to go back to booting up to the Iriver firmware.

I would be interested to know if you manage to solve this, as it seems to
have baffled everyone.
